Do you need a Root Canal?

Symptom - Sensitivity to hot or cold foods after dental treatment

Dental work may inflame the pulp inside your tooth causing temporary sensitivity. This can be a sign that you need a Root Canal.

Symptom - Brief sensitivity to hot or cold foods

If this discomfort only lasts a few moments, it may mean the pulp of your tooth is inflamed. However the sensitivity may be caused by a small amount of decay, a loose filling, or recession of your gums. This can also be a signal you may need a Root Canal.

Symptom - Constant severe tooth pain, swelling of the gum and sensitivity to touch

You may have an abscess, which has caused an infection in the surrounding tissue and bone. This can be another sign you need a Root Canal.

Symptom - Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods

This pain most likely means that the pulp in your tooth has been damaged either by deep decay or physical trauma. This is another sign that a Root Canal may be needed.

Symptom - Dull ache or pressure in your upper teeth and jaw

The pain from a sinus headache is often felt in the face and teeth. Grinding of teeth, a condition known as bruxism, can also cause this type of ache. However this can also be another sign you need a Root Canal.

Symptom - Sharp pain when biting down on food

There are several possible causes of this type of pain: decay, a loose filling or sometimes even a crack in the tooth. There may also be damage to the pulp tissue inside the toot which may need Root Canal Treatment to resolve.

Referral by your Dentist

Many of our patients come to us through a referral from their regular dentist. This may be because their case is particularly complex, or their normal dentist may feel that they require a specialist Endodontist. Whether you are referred to us by your dentist, or you come to us through other means, we aim to provide you with the highest standard of care possible. If you have any questions at all, our expert team will always be on hand to guide and support you through every moment of your time spent with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Endodontist?

An Endodontist is a specialist dentist who deals with dental pain and infection. Endodontists are experts in root canal treatment and surgery. It takes many years of additional training in order for a dentist to become an Endodontist and to provide the highest standard of care possible.

Will root canal treatment be painful?

This is the biggest concern of most of our patients. Part of our particular speciality at EndoCare is to make sure that any procedure we carry out is as comfortable and pain-free as possible. We use the latest injection techniques, as well as stronger anaesthetics to make sure that you will not feel any pain during your procedure.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a means of saving a tooth that may be damaged by decay, fracture or infection. The purpose of root canal  treatment is to restore the tooth and the surrounding tissue to health, relieving you of pain and infection while avoiding the need to have the tooth removed.

How will I feel after treatment?

There will inevitably be some bruising following the procedure, in most cases, this bruising will subside quickly. After your treatment we advise you on any pain medication that you may require, and in the more complex cases, we will provide you with precise care instructions to make your recovery as quick and as pain-free as possible.

Will a lot of x-rays be required?

X-Rays will have to be taken to assess and monitor your treatment and healing. However we always keep the number of X-Rays taken to a minimum, and you can rest assured that we only use the very latest digital X-Ray equipment that produces high quality X-Ray images at only 10–20% of the ‘normal’ X-Ray dose.

How long does treatment take?

Depending on how complex your treatment is, we aim to complete treatment in a single visit, which will last between one and two hours. If your tooth is very infected, or if the treatment is an emergency visit, we will ensure immediate or urgent pain and infection control is taken care of, then everything else is normally completed during the next visit.

A couple of hours, how will I cope?

We normally put a sheet of rubber around the tooth and use a little prop so that your jaw doesn’t get tired – we will even put a film on for you to watch. It is not uncommon for our patients to fall asleep during treatment. If you are particularly nervous, additional sedation can always be arranged to really cut down on any stress during the procedure.

Do I need a dentist to referr me?

Ideally you do need to be referred to us by your regular dentist, but we do welcome self-referrals too. However, as the diagnosis is often unclear in these cases, we prefer to book a consultation appointment so that we can advise you on all aspects of treatment. Please contact us for more information.

This is just to thank you for the root-canal treatment which you carried out on my tooth last Tuesday afternoon. All has now settled down and I can chew on the tooth as normal. I think that we both had a tough ninety minutes last Tuesday but for me it proved well worthwhile. Please thank your office manager and her kindness in letting me sit in her office while waiting for my car.

Thank you so much for once again saving a difficult tooth!! Another thank you is due to you for your gift to my daughter of the recipe book written by your aunt. Noelle returned to Dubai with the book firmly tucked under her arm. She returns in July for the summer and is going to make the date chutney and deliver a jar to you!! The big recipe is for the okra which is one of her favourite vegetables.
